It is no secret that I have a love afair with sandwiches. There is something about delicious meat stuffed into hoagie bread. My go-to sandwich chain is Jersey Mike’s!

I’ve made a ton of Jersey Mike’s copycat sandwiches at home, such as the Italian Sub and the Tuna Sub. Today, we are making my favorite: The Jersey Mike’s Famous Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich.

This Philly cheesesteak copycat recipe is so great. It is loaded with delicious meat, gooey cheese, and sautéed onions and peppers. This sandwich is delicious down to the last bite.

Ingredients for Jersey Mike’s Philly Cheese Steak Recipe

ingredients for jersey mike's philly cheese steak recipe: meat, white american cheese, onions, green bell pepers, red bell peppers.
  • Hoagie Roll: Perfect soft bread for cheesesteak sandwiches.
  • Onion: We saute the onion on the stovetop.
  • Red Bell Pepper and Green Bell Pepper: We saute the bell peppers on the stovetop with the onion.
  • Mayonnaise: To toast the bread. Mayo produces a better toast on bread than butter.
  • Sliced Meat: Use sliced ribeye steak or skirt steak. Check the grocery store butcher as they might sell shaved steak made specifically for cheese steak sandwiches.
  • Garlic Powder, Ground Pepper, Salt: Simple seasonings, nothing overpowering.
  • American White Cheese: The perfect melted cheese for this cheesesteak sandwich.

Tips To Make The Best Philly Cheesesteak

Sure, making Jersey Mike’s Philly Cheesesteak at home is easy. However, you can still mess up! Here are my top tips to make the best cheesesteak you’ll ever eat.

steak, peppers, onions, and cheese on a pan.
melted, gooey cheese is the best

Use White American Cheese

Jersey Mike’s uses white American cheese for their Famous Philly Cheesesteak. And let me tell you, it is the BEST cheese to use for this sandwich recipe.

An absolute MUST to make the best cheesesteak sandwich at home is to use White American Cheese. Ah, yes, we want the ultra-processed, cheap cheese! American cheese stays melted for longer. It has the perfect melty cheese consistency for Philly cheesesteaks.

Classic Philly cheesesteak fans will swear by Cheez Whiz. Jersey Mike’s doesn’t use Cheez Whiz, but it is a good option.

Choose The Right Bread

Skip breads that have crusty exteriors, such as French baguettes and sourdough. The crust makes it difficult to bite down into the cheesesteak sandwich.

Any good cheesesteak is made with a soft bread such as amoroso roll or hoagie rolls. The good news is that these are easy to find. Check the bakery department at your local grocery store.

If you really want the Jersey Mike’s experience at home, you can bake the bread with my Jersey Mike’s Bread Copycat recipe. It’s a good bread recipe (even if I do say so myself).

Thinly Slice The Meat

I have tried this recipe with larger cuts of meat. Trust me, it is best when the meat is thinly sliced.

You can buy thinly sliced meat at the grocery store. Check out the meat department. If you do not see it, ask a butcher to help you out. They are more than happy to thinly slice meat for you.

I bought my meat from Costco. I use this meat often whenever I am making sandwiches at home.

Storing and Reheating

These sandwiches can be made the night before and packed the next day for a delicious lunch at work.

If you plan to make the sandwich and eat it at a later time, simply wrap the sandwich in aluminum foil and store in the refrigerator.

When you are ready to eat the cheese steak, heat it in the oven at 350℉ (176℃) for 10 minutes (while it is still wrapped in foil).

You can also microwave the sub. To microwave, take the sub out of the aluminum foil and place it on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave it for increments of 30 seconds until it is warm.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp (2 tbsp) Neutral Oil vegetable oil or avocado oil
  • ½ (½) White Onion diced
  • ½ (½) Red Bell Pepper diced
  • ½ (½) Green Bell Pepper diced
  • 1 (1) Hoagie Roll see notes
  • ¼ Cup (59.15 ml) Mayonnaise
  • 12 Ounces (340.2 g) Sliced Meat see notes
  • 2 tsp (2 tsp) Garlic Powder
  • 1 tbsp (1 tbsp) Ground Pepper
  • 1 tbsp (1 tbsp) Salt
  • 8 Slices (8 Slices) White Cheese see notes

Instructions

  • Saute Vegetables: Heat a large skillet over medium heat then add your oil. Once the oil is heated, saute the diced white onion for three minutes. Then, add the diced red bell pepper and green bell pepper. Continue to saute for three more minutes or until the vegetables are cooked thoroughly. Set aside in a medium bowl.
  • Toast the Bread Roll: Slice the hoagie roll in half. Spread mayonnaise. Place on the skillet over medium heat (mayonnaise side down). Toast for roughly 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Set aside.
  • Cook Sliced Meat: In the same skillet, add your sliced meat. Saute until meat is cooked thoroughly. Then, add in the vegetables. Add the garlic powder, ground pepper, and salt. Stir and taste. Feel free to add an extra pinch of salt or ground pepper.
  • Add Cheese: With your spatula, group the meat and vegetables in the center of the pan. Then, add the slices of cheese in the middle. Cover with a lid and let the cheese melt for one minute. Take the pan lid off.
  • Build Your Sub: Put all of the meat, vegetables, and cheese into your toasted hoagie roll. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Special Equipment (affiliate links): 12-inch Stainless Steel Pan
  • Bread to Use: I used my Jersey Mike’s Bread Copycat Recipe. However, if you don’t feel like baking, a hoagie roll from your local grocery store’s bakery will do.
  • Sliced Meat: I bought thinly sliced meat at Costco and then sliced it into smaller strips on a cutting board. You can find sliced meat at the grocery store that was made specifically for Philly cheesesteak sandwiches.
  • Types of Cheese to Use: Traditionally, Philly cheesesteak sandwiches are made with provolone cheese. However, Jersey Mike’s uses white American cheese, so that’s what I used in this recipe. I highly recommend using white American cheese since it stays melted for longer than provolone. But if you can’t find it, use provolone.
  • How to Store: Wrap the sub in aluminum foil.
  • How to Reheat: When you are ready to eat the cheese steaks, heat it in the oven at 350℉ (176℃) for 10 minutes. You can also microwave the sub. To microwave, take the sandwich out of the foil and place it on a plate. Microwave for 30-second increments until heated.
