By now, you would have noticed my love affair with Jersey Mike’s. I’m clearly a sucker for subs, sandwiches, and all things bread.
I have delved deep into the world of copycat Jersey Mike’s recipes. So far, I have made Jersey Mike’s Oil and Vinegar, Jersey Mike’s Original Italian Sub (my favorite cold sub), their tuna sandwich recipe, and also the famous Mike’s Way recipe as well.
So, it’s only fitting that we make a Jersey Mike’s bread recipe at home! This homemade bread is the BEST bread for subs and sandwiches. It has a soft texture on the inside but is able to hold its shape.

Why This Recipe Works:
- It’s a simple recipe that even a caveman can make
- Easy-to-find ingredients.
- The PERFECT white bread for sandwiches
- The homemade version tastes just like Jersey Mike’s Subs
Ingredient List to Make Jersey Mike’s Bread At Home

- All-Purpose Flour: The key ingredient to any bread recipe.
- Active Dry Yeast: Gives rise to the dough. Without it, we would have flatbread.
- Sugar: Sugar feeds the yeast, increases the yeast activity, and tenderizes the dough.
- Milk: To make soft bread, you need fat in the dough. The whole milk softens the dough and helps produce a phenomenal texture.
- Water: The water should be room temperature. Liquid activates the yeast and gives the bread structure.
- Salt: Every bread needs salt! Salt is a flavor enhancer.
- Oil: I like neutral oil when baking homemade bread. It doesn’t change the flavor the way butter does.

Ingredient Substitutions
Yes, this bread recipe is easy, and all of the simple ingredients are easy to find. However, you might be missing an ingredient or two.
Here are my recommended substitutions:
- All-purpose flour: Bread flour! Bread flour would be an amazing substitute for bread recipes. The gluten in bread flour is higher, which makes for chewier bread.
- Active Dry Yeast: Instant dry yeast or fresh yeast.
- Oil: Room temperature or melted butter. You can also use shortening.
These are small changes that will not affect the final product.

Step-By-Step Homemade Hoagie Roll Instructions
Step 1: Bloom The Yeast
Add the water, milk, sugar, and yeast into a mixing bowl. Let it sit for five minutes or until the yeast is foamy.
If you are using instant yeast, you can skip this step.
Step 2: Knead
Add all of the ingredients to the bowl of your stand mixer. Using the dough hook attachment, knead for ten minutes.

If you do not have a stand mixer, knead the bread dough by hand. It will take double the amount of time. However, it’s a great workout! And the bread will turn out the same.
Step 3: Shape
Divide the dough into four equal pieces. Using your hands in a back-and-forth motion, shape the dough into logs.
Place the logs on a baking sheet or silicone bread pan. Cover for its second proofing and let rise for forty-five minutes.
Step 4: Bake
Bake at 425℉ (218℃) for fifteen to twenty minutes or until the bread rolls are golden brown on the outside. Let the bread sit for one hour, then enjoy!
Homemade Sub Sandwich Ideas
This bread is PERFECT to make homemade subs! You can fill it with deli meats, different types of cheese, and vegetables!
Before you know it, you will be running a sub shop from home.

Here are some subs you can make at home:
- Tuna Salad Sub: Not in the mood for a beef sandwich? Fill the bread with Jimmy Johns Tuna salad instead!
- Italian Sub: Fill it with a variety of Italian meats such as pepperoni, prosciutto, and salami.
- Philly Cheesesteak: Why not make Jersey Mike’s Philly Cheesesteak? You’ve already made the bread.
- Roast Beef Sandwich: Buy some roast beef from the deli. Top it with provolone cheese.

Tips For Baking Homemade Bread
Baking bread at home does NOT have to be a daunting task.
I mastered how to bake bread by baking sourdough every week (yeah, I am a bit crazy).
Since I have baked a lot of bread, here are my best tips for baking bread at home:

Watch The Dough, NOT the Clock
For best results, watch the dough and not the clock. I say this all the time, and I sound like a broken record, haha.
If a recipe says to let the dough double for one hour, that does not necessarily mean that it will take one hour for your dough to double.
It might take over an hour. Or, it can double in as little as thirty minutes. Once the dough has doubled (regardless of how long it’s been), then move on to the next step.

Use a Kitchen Scale
Baking is a science, and the ingredients should be measured correctly.
Measuring ingredients with measuring cups can lead to subpar results.
So, always measure your ingredients using a kitchen scale.
Storage Instructions
This Jersey Mike’s bread will last at room temperature for up to three days. You can store it in a bread box, wrap it in plastic wrap, or use an airtight container.
If you need to store it for a longer period of time, place it in an airtight container and freeze it.
When you are ready to eat it again, defrost the bread on the counter for at least one hour.
