I am not ashamed to admit my love for Jimmy John’s French bread. Although I am not a huge fast food fan, their bread is perfect for any classic sandwich recipe (Subway’s hearty Italian bread is a close second). Sure, we can always buy hoagie rolls at any grocery store. However, they pale in comparison!
The good news is that this copycat Jimmy John’s bread recipe tastes just like the real deal! You can batch-make this bread and eat it whenever your heart desires. Plus, this recipe is so easy to make.

- Perfect with deli meats
Ingredients For Jimmy John’s Bread Recipe
- All Purpose Flour: Or bread flour. The all-purpose flour I use has a protein content of 11.5%, which is perfect for bread. It’s cheaper than bread flour and chewy enough for me.
- Warm Water: The water should be around 115°F or 46°C. This is important! If you use cold water, it will slow down the yeast and this recipe will take hours to rise.
- Yeast: The leavening agent responsible for the bread rise. I use active dry yeast. You can use instant yeast. Whichever you choose, make sure the yeast is alive and not expired or else your bread dough might not rise. To learn more about baking breads at home, read my Guide To Baking With Yeast.
- Granulated Sugar: Helps feed the yeast and adds a sweetness to the bread.
- Oil: I use avocado oil. Use a neutral oil that has no taste such as peanut oil or vegetable oil.
- Salt: Enhances the flavor. Do not forget to add the salt!
Ingredient Substitutions
- All Purpose Flour: Bread flour. I have yet to try this recipe with whole-wheat flour.
- Sugar: Brown sugar. You can also use honey. However, you might need to add an extra tablespoon or two of flour if your dough becomes sticky.
- Oil: Ghee or melted butter. You can use olive oil but it will add taste to the final product.
How To Make Jimmy Johns Bread Recipe
In the bowl of your stand mixer (or a large bowl if kneading by hand), combine the sugar, yeast and warm water. Let it sit for five minutes until foamy.
Add the all purpose flour, oil, and salt. Knead for 10 minutes until the dough is soft.
Place the bread dough in a greased bowl. Then, cover the bowl with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Let the dough rise at room temperature for one hour or until doubled in size.
Shaping: Place the dough on a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into 6 equal portions (they should weigh roughly 112 grams each).
Roll each piece into a ball then let sit covered for five minutes. This will relax the gluten and make it easier to roll into loaves. Afterward, roll each piece into a log that is 6 inches in length. Place onto your baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for an additional hour or until doubled.
Preheat your oven to 375°F. Position the oven rack in the center.
Baking: Bake for 18 minutes or until golden brown on the outside. The internal temp should be 195°F.
Let sit on a wire rack until ready to eat.
Tips For Success
- Do not use expired or dead yeast: The yeast should foam up. If it does not, throw it out and buy new yeast. Expired or dead yeast cannot make your bread rise. You’ll end up with a dense bread that isn’t pleasant to eat.
- Make sure the water is warm: The water should be around 115°F or 46°C. It should be warm enough for your fingers. If it is too cold, it will slow down the yeast activity and your bread dough might not rise. If it is too hot, the yeast will die and your bread dough definitely will not rise. Think Goldilocks! Not too hot, not too cold, just right.
- Make sure the dough doubles in size before moving onto the next step: If an hour has passed and your dough has not doubled, keep waiting until it doubles! If it does not double, your yeast may be dead or the room might be too cold. Move your dough into a warmer spot.
- Bake these on the middle rack of the oven: For an even bake, these should be baked in the middle rack of the oven. Bake them too low and the bottom can burn. Bake them too high and the tops can burn.
How To Store and Reheat
To store, let these hoagie rolls cool down to room temperature on a wire rack. Once they are completely cool, place them in an airtight container.
They will stay fresh at room temperature for up to three days. If you need to store them for longer, you can place them in the refrigerator or freezer. Freezing is my favorite method of storing homemade bread since it preserves the quality. Whether it is a loaf of bread, a baguette, or a burger bun, it will taste as if it is freshly baked once it’s heated up again!
To heat the bread, defrost it overnight. Place in the oven at 300°F or 150°F for five minutes or until warm.
