Ah, don’t you LOVE it when the homemade version is just as good as the one from the restaurant? This recipe is the exact copycat of the Jersey Mike’s Tuna salad! Stay in the comfort of your own kitchen and whip this yummy tuna sub up in less than ten minutes. How about that for a quick lunch?! Best of all, it is so easy to make.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Very affordable!!! You can make several of these sandwiches at home for the price of just one Jersey Mike’s sub.
  • Easy and quick to make. You can make this in less time than it takes to go to Jersey Mike’s and order a tuna fish sandwich.
  • Simple ingredients. Simple, but they’re still high-quality ingredients (and affordable!). Your local grocery store has these ingredients in stock. No need to go to the fish market.

It’s tuna… what’s there NOT to like?! I’m sure if Paul Walker was still around, he would say that he likes the tuna here. Haha, just kidding.

Ingredients and Substitutions

All you need to make Jersey Mike’s tuna recipe are simple ingredients you can find at your local grocery store. These ingredients are so common. You probably already have most of them in your kitchen.

  • Canned Chunky Lite Tuna: The star ingredient to any tuna salad recipe. Yum.
  • Canned Albacore Tuna: Jimmy John’s uses two types of tuna in their tuna sub recipes. Don’t have canned albacore? No worries, simply use another can of Chunky Lite Tuna. The difference is minimal.
  • Mayonnaise: It’s not a tuna salad without mayonnaise. And if you’re making a tuna salad without mayonnaise, I have a couple of questions for you lol.
  • Celery: Finely chopped and diced. No one wants gigantic celery sticks when biting into a delicious sub.
  • Black Pepper: We start with ¼ teaspoon. Feel free to add more if you would like.
  • OPTIONAL Soy Sauce: Adds a ton of umami!! This is DELICIOUS!

Optional Secret Ingredient: Soy Sauce!

An OPTIONAL ingredient that you can add to your tuna salad to elevate it is soy sauce! No, Jimmy John’s does NOT use soy sauce in their tuna salad.

I repeat: JERSEY MIKE’S DOES NOT USE SOY SAUCE IN THEIR TUNA SALAD. (I had to put that in all caps because I know people will comment saying that this recipe isn’t an exact copycat due to the optional added soy sauce).

However, the soy sauce adds extra umami to the tuna and I MUST have it whenever I make tuna salad. If you do like the added soy sauce, check out the Jimmy John’s Tuna Salad Copycat Recipe

Tips to Make The Best Tuna Salad Sandwich

I have made this recipe a couple of times at home. Here are my best tips:

  • DRAIN THE TUNA CANS!!!! Make sure to drain as much of the liquid as possible from the tuna cans. I cannot stress this enough. If you do not drain the liquid, you will be left with a soggy sandwich. The soggy sandwich will make you into a sad boy. I don’t want you to be a sad boy.
  • Add toppings. You can top off this sandwich as you would with any sub order. Add pickles, lettuce, juicy tomatoes, red onion, and dill pickle. Hard-boiled eggs go well with tuna sandwiches. You can add whichever bed of greens you want such as spinach and romaine lettuce.
  • Make it Mike’s Way. Jersey Mike’s Subs is famous for making their sandwiches “Mike’s Way”, which adds lettuce, tomato, red onions, and their secret sauce. Learn to make it with my CopyCat Mike’s Way Recipe.

Notes

  • Draining the Tuna Cans: Drain as much of the liquid as possible! This helps prevent the tuna salad from being too liquid, resulting in wet and soggy bread.
  • How to Store: This tuna salad recipe will last in the refrigerator for up to three days. Make sure to put it in an airtight container.
  • Tuna Substitution: You do not have to use one can of each type of tuna. If you only have two cans of chunk light tuna or two cans of albacore tuna, you can use those instead. It will still turn out well.
  • Optional Soy Sauce: Jersey Mike’s does NOT use soy sauce in their tuna salad! However, JIMMY JOHN’S TUNA RECIPE uses soy sauce and I swear it takes the tuna salad to the next level. It’s a personal preference. It is up to you whether or not you want to add it.
