Ingredients

All you need to make Jimmy John’s tuna recipe are simple ingredients you can find at your local grocery store. These ingredients are so common. You probably already have most of them in your kitchen.

  • 2 Cans Tuna (5 ounces each): The main ingredient. I recommend Starkist Chunky Light Tuna. You can also use albacore tuna instead. Although it’s a different type of tuna, it will still taste like the classic tuna salad at Jersey Mike’s.
  • Mayonnaise: Regular mayonnaise. I haven’t tried this with low-fat mayo. If you do, please leave a comment to let readers know how that turns out.
  • Celery: Roughly 1/4th cup of diced celery. You can add more or less depending on your heart’s desire. It is a personal preference.
  • White Onion: Roughly 1/4th cup of finely diced onions. Just as you did with the celery, you can add more or less.
  • Soy Sauce: I LOVE soy sauce in the tuna salad.
  • Black Pepper: Just a pinch!

Tips For Success

Here are a few tips to make a great tuna salad:

  • Drain the liquid from the tuna. Make sure to squeeze any excess liquid from the canned tuna! If you do not do this, then you will end up with a soggy sandwich. You do not want that.
  • Store in an airtight container: Don’t let it sit out. Fish tend to spoil and get “fishy” when left out. Store this in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

What Goes Well With This Recipe

You can enjoy this tuna salad in a variety of ways.

Jimmy John’s website states, “Our delicious house-made tuna salad on a sandwich. The Totally Tuna comes topped with fresh lettuce, cucumber, and tomato. Customize with any of your favorite Freebies or Add-ons.”

Bread To Use

In my experience, it is best to use some type of sandwich roll, such as hoagie rolls, french bread, or sandwich rolls.

You can use regular sliced bread. However, I have found that the texture of sliced bread is too soft for tuna sandwiches and tuna melts.

If you are feeling adventurous, you can try baking bread! This easy Jimmy John’s Bread Copycat recipe is perfect for beginners. You can also try baking this Subway Italian Herb and Cheese Bread Recipe.
