Out of all the subs that you can order at Jersey Mike’s, the Italian sub is hands down the best one. I’m not usually a fan of cold sandwiches. However, nothing beats their Original Italian Sub until now! What if I told you you can enjoy this in your home for a fraction of the cost?
This copycat Italian Jersey Mike’s Sub recipe tastes EXACTLY like the one you would buy at the restaurant. I researched and found the exact recipe that they use.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Quick! It takes less than five minutes
- This tastes exactly like Jersey Mike’s Italian Sub! (because it is).
- Cheap! Save money by making this at home instead of buying it.
Ingredients and Substitutions
Jersey Mike’s uses a variety of Italian meats for “The Original Italian” sub. The base ingredients are provolone cheese, ham, proscuittini, cappacuolo, salami, and pepperoni (source: Jersey Mikes website).
- Provolone Cheese: Swiss, mozzarella. Any cheese you prefer.
- Ham: Jersey Mike’s uses boiled ham. However, I’ve tried sweet ham with this recipe and it’s still just as good.
- Prosciuttini: A little difficult to find. You might need to go to an Italian deli to find this. However, prosciutto is a great substitute and is easy to find.
- Cappacuolo: Also known as “coppa” or “cappacuolo”. It is an Italian cured meat made from pork shoulder or neck.
- Salami: Jersey Mike’s uses hard salami. Feel free to use Genoa Salami.
- Pepperoni: Buy the wide peperoni. You can find the wide type at the deli in the grocery store.
What’s The Best Bread For The Original Italian Sub?
Jersey Mikes offers five different types of sub rolls:
1. White Bread
2. Rosemary Parmesan Bread
3. Seeded Italian Bread
4. Wheat Bread
5. Gluten Free Bread
You can easily find these breads at any local grocery store. This sub will go great with any hoagie roll, Italian roll, or French bread baguette.
If you are a baker, I have a copycat recipe for Jimmy John’s Bread that is amazing for cold subs. I also have a recipe for Subway’s Italian Herbs and Cheese Bread that is perfect for Italian subs.
Which type of bread you choose depends on your personal preference.
Make It Mike’s Way
“Mike’s Way” is a combination of ingredients such as iceberg lettuce, fresh tomatoes, red onion, oregano, and “The Juice” (a red wine vinegar and olive oil blend sauce). It is said that these are the perfect combination of ingredients for any sub-recipe.

Add Jersey Mike’s Olive Oil Blend
This is called “THE JUICE!” The olive oil and vinegar blend is so delicious. Honestly, I make this all the time.
Jersey Mike’s Italian Sub Recipe Assembly:
BEST WAY TO ASSEMBLE SUB:

I did a TON of research to learn how to assemble this sub (haha, call me a little crazy). I stumbled upon “The Crazy Sub Guy” on YouTube, who is a Jersey Mike’s employee! He builds the Italian sub daily. In the video, he shows exactly how to assemble this sub.
Tips To Make The Best Italian Sub:
- Use High-Quality Ingredients: Jersey Mike’s Subs are great because the ingredients are fresh. So, if you want to make a great Italian sub, you should only use great ingredients. That means throwing out that wilted lettuce and making a trip to the grocery store.
- Add Other Ingredients That Your Heart Desires: You are making this sub sandwich at home. No need to stick to the recipe. You can add cherry pepper relish, Chipotle maro, or whatever else you want to add. Do you love banana peppers? Add an entire jar (I’d question your tastes but am not here to judge LOL)!
