Whenever I make my homemade Brioche recipe for hot cross buns, I always have leftovers! As a baker, I do not want to throw away any of this buttery bread. So, I end up freezing my leftover brioche buns and eating them another day. 

The good news is that brioche freezes well! As long as this French bread is stored properly, it can last up to three months in the freezer. After it is reheated, it will still have that buttery flavor and tender crumb!

How To Freeze Brioche Bread

Here are the best ways to freeze Brioche bread:

  3. Food Vacuum Bags

By using any of these three methods, you can properly freeze the bread and prevent freezer burn from happening. This will help extend the life of your brioche loaf and it will last for months in the freezer. All it takes are a few simple steps and less than five minutes of your time.

The good news about these methods is that you are BOUND to already have the supplies at home! No need to go to the store to buy supplies! They are common, everyday products that most people have in their kitchen.

Freezing Brioche Bread In An Airtight Container

Using an airtight container is perfect for storing multiple brioche buns or loaves. 

Airtight Container Steps:
1. Let the bread or buns cool down to room temperature.
2. Next step: Wrap the loaf or brioche buns individually in plastic wrap or cling film. This will help prevent freezer burn.
3. Place the wrapped buns into an airtight container.

Benefits of Using An Airtight Container:

  • Reusable: You can reuse the container over and over again! This method has the least waste. 
  • Easy Organization: The container will keep your fridge organized. No need to dig through pounds of frozen meat and pastries just to retrieve one single bread bun.
  • Freeze A Big Batch And Defrost Individually: The container can fit multiple buns! Also, since the buns/slices will be individually wrapped, you can take out only what you need and keep the rest frozen.
  • Stays Fresh For Longer: The airtight container minimizes the exposure to air and moisture, which is a contributing factor to freezer burn. 

I use this method every week! I am constantly baking brioche buns, donuts, and other sweet treats. Since my husband and I cannot eat all these baked goods in one sitting, I freeze them in an airtight container so that we can eat them within the following months. 

Optionally, if you are freezing an entire loaf, you can cut individual slices. That way, whenever you want to eat a slice, you do not have to defrost all of it. You can take out however many slices you plan on eating and keep the rest frozen in the freezer.

Freezer bags are another great option for freezing brioche bread and buns.

Freezer Bag Steps:
1. Let the bread or brioche buns cool down to room temperature.
2. Wrap each loaf or bun individually in plastic wrap or aluminum foil.
3. Place the wrapped buns into a freezer bag.
4. Slowly close the freezer bag. Make sure to squeeze out excess air before sealing the bag.

Benefits of Using Freezer Bags:

  • Provides Minimal Air Exposure: Unlike an airtight food container that may have extra space that has air, we can squeeze out the excess air from the freezer bag. This will minimize the air and moisture exposure and prolong the shelf life of your bread.
  • Minimal Clean-Up: No need to wash dishes! You can use the freezer bag multiple times. Once you have gotten your use out of them, simply throw them away.
  • Easy Organization: Moreover, you won’t be digging around your chest freezer to find your leftover brioche bread. 
  • Space Efficiency: You can fit more freezer bags in your freezer than plastic airtight containers.

This is another method I use weekly whenever I am freezing homemade brioche bread. I have limited space in my freezer, it cannot fit many airtight food containers. Those food containers take up a ton of space! To work with my small freezer, I use a lot of freezer bags to store my homemade yeast breads.

1. Let the bread or brioche buns cool down to room temperature.
2. Place the bread into a vacuum bag.
3. Use the “pulse” method on the Foodsaver machine and seal the bag.

Benefits of Using Food Vacuum Bags:

  • Extended Freshness: Since these bags are airtight, they prevent the bread from being exposed to air and moisture. This can extend the freshness compared to the other storage options.
  • Reduced Freezer Burn: Vacuum sealing removes air from the bag. This helps prevent freezer burn.
  • Space Efficiency: Vacuum-sealed bags take up less space in the freezer compared to other storage options.
  • No Plastic Wrap Needed: Since vacuum sealing removes the air from the bag, there is no need to wrap each slice or brioche bun in cling wrap. 

Out of all the methods to freeze brioche bread, this is the BEST one! Vacuum sealing removes air from the bag, which reduces the chances of freezer burn on the bread. This airtight seal prevents exposure to air and moisture, which extends the shelf life of the bread.

If you don’t have a vacuum food sealer, I highly recommend buying one. I have stored not only my homemade artisan bread in it, but also stews, pasta sauces, bread pudding, and even brioche dough!

How To Freeze Brioche Buns

Have delicious brioche burger buns that you want to freeze? No worries! You can freeze the buns the same way you freeze a loaf or individual slices. They will last a long time in the freezer (up to three months).

For best results, wrap each bun in plastic wrap. Then, place them in a freezer-safe bag or an airtight container.

You can freeze brioche bread for up to three months as long as it is stored properly. Storing it in an airtight container, plastic bag, or freezer bag will prevent freezer burn from happening. Freezer burn will ruin the taste and texture of your bread! 

How To Reheat Frozen Brioche Bread

Steps to reheat frozen brioche buns/bread:
1. Let the bread loaf or buns defrost overnight in the fridge or on the counter while it is still in its container.
2. The next day, preheat the oven to 350°F.
3. Place the buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or tin foil. Bake the buns/bread for five minutes or until warm.

You can easily reheat frozen bread so that it tastes fresh again. The best way to reheat frozen brioche bread is to first let it thaw overnight in the refrigerator or at room temperature. Afterward, you can bake it or air fry it at 350°F for five minutes.

Thawing the buns before toasting is critical when reheating them. If the bread is not thawed beforehand, then it will still be frozen in the middle after it has been reheated.

If you bought a loaf of brioche from the grocery store or local bakery, it is best to freeze before the expiration date. If it is past this date, then it is best to throw it in the trash. Mold spores can grow on the bread even if they are unseen. 

Let Freshly Baked Bread Cool Before Storing

If you are trying to store homemade brioche bread, then you will need to let it cool down first. Take it out of the loaf pan (or off the baking sheet) and let it cool on a wire rack. Once the bread is at room temperature, follow one of the storage methods for freezing.

Cut The Loaf Into Slices Before Freezing

If you do not plan on eating an entire loaf, then you should cut it into slices before freezing it. That way, you can take out however many slices you need whenever you want to eat it. It is not good for the taste and texture of the bread to unfreeze and then freeze it again.
